Dunmore Friary  ~  Dunmore

St. Patrick is said to have built a monastery in Dunmore, upon the site of which a friary for Hermits of St.

Augustine was afterwards founded by Walter de Birmingham, Lord Athenry, in 1425. After the Reformation part of the friary was converted into a parish church of the establishment, the rest being levelled, now forms the market place.

The Friary, near the centre of the town was founded for the Augustinian friars by Walter de Birmingham, Lord Baron of Athenry, in 1425. 0f he church remains, consisting of a nave and chancel with a tower.

There is a fine and decorative 15th century west doorway.

Lord Athenry saved the monastery from suppression in 1541, but in 1574 John Burke-Fitzthomas seized it. However, he was later expelled, and as late as 1641 there were still a prior and 30 friars in the community.
