Located in the centre of Dunmore Town. Just
30km north East of Galway City Founded
in 1998, Dunmore Demesne Golf Club is 9 hole parkland course located in Dunmore,
County Galway.
The late 1990s saw a number of courses open for play in Ireland, some in a blaze
of national publicity, others to the welcoming applause of local golfers.
Dunmore Demesne can consider itself among the latter.
It opened in 1998 and certainly didn't need a national fanfare to show its
worth.
Indeed, highly respected golf course architect Eddie Hackett designed the course
and was quick to describe it as a 'little gem', and rightly so.
Dunmore is a scenic course, with mature trees and scenic landscape being its
main feature.
History of Golf in Dunmore
The first reference to golf in Dunmore refers to a course in Quarter during the
1920's. The course there was described as a tough test over hilly and sandy
ground. Despite the fact that over the years Dunmore produced many fine golfers
most of whom were members of Ballyhaunis Golf Club there was no organised golf in
Dunmore until the lat 70's. The festival had been running for a number of years
when a group of golfers decided to organise a fun day in Ballyhaunis. The year
was 1978 and it was sponsored by the late Conor Fahy. The day became a huge
success and the prizes were coveted by all. It was not unusual to have close to
250 golfer taking part. The original format was singles, often a four-ball played
out of one bag but that didn't lessen the fun. Tommy Keenan was in charge of
handicap allocation Eventually a scramble was introduced and this proved equally
if not more of a draw. In 1988 Dunmore Golfing Society was formed and this
introduced many golfers to organised golf. The Society played throughout
Connacht and went on tours to Waterford and Donegal. Eventually the Golf Club
evolved from the society.
